It's been a while since Jason Robert Brown has been featured, so this week we're looking at one of his most recent musical exponents that premiered off-broadway in 2024, following the enormous success of his Tony-winning broadway revival of "Parade" the previous year. "The Connector" is based on a novel by Daisy Prince, and is set in a fictional magazine exploring the world of 1990s New York City journalism, where themes of journalistic integrity, plagiarism, and gender equality are explored in great detail.
The musical is a collaboration between Brown and playwright Jonathan Marc Sherman, the latter of whom wrote the book of the musical, and was an instant critical success for the pair, with the world premiere production at the MCC Theatre earning a whole host of nods during awards season, including 7 Outer Critics Circle and 8 Drama Desk nominations, though it largely lost out to other higher profile productions.

Starring in its world premiere production were Tony nominee Scott Bakula, as well as Ben Levi Ross and Hannah Cruz, with original author Daisy Prince also acting as the musical's director. Whether this still extremely new musical will have further life beyond its initial run only time will tell, however Brown is a highly prominent name in the world of musical theatre, and so onehas to conclude that if he believes it willbeahit, he will stopat nothing to make sure it is given a future.
